Established in honor and in memory of Bobby Drew Abercrombie and Matthew Emmitt Abercrombie. Funds distributed from the endowment shall be used to provide scholarship support for undergraduate students who have participated in the University’s Recreational Sports sponsored student organizations (Sport Clubs) during one or more academic semesters at the time of selection. Preference shall be given to students serving as officers or in leadership roles of the organization who attended high school in Dallas, Texas, and/or who participated in a sports program while attending high school.

2024-25 Scholarship Information

• One $1,500 scholarship will be awarded.
• The scholarship recipient will be notified when the review of applications is complete.
• Previous Abercrombie Endowed Scholarship recipients are not eligible to receive this award.

All applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be enrolled at UT as an undergraduate student in the spring 2025 term.
• Must be an active club member (as determined by RecSports Sport Clubs staff) and in good academic standing with the University.
• Must currently serve as a RecSports representative and/or other club-established officer position for your sport club or have served in either of those roles in a previous academic term.
• Your club must be in good standing with Student Activities in the Office of the Dean of Students and RecSports

The Acacia Fraternity Endowed Scholarship was founded by five individuals – René Garza, David Dunlap, Steve Lappin, Ed Knight and Harry Craig – all Acacia members in the 1970s. They established this award, along with contributions from more than 20 of their peers, as a way to honor their fraternity’s intramural achievements and recognize exceptional RecSports student employees.

1. Enrollment at UT Austin as an undergraduate student during the Spring 2025 term.
2. Current employment in good standing as a student employee at RecSports during the Spring 2025 term.
3. A minimum of three complete terms of employment at RecSports, the Spring 2025 term may count toward this requirement if you are employed the entire term. These terms do not need to be consecutive, and summer terms count if you worked the entire summer. Please note that your work history will be verified should you become a finalist.
4. Awards may be made to students in their final year before graduation if a less than a full-time course load will enable them to complete their degree.
5. Applicants must be enrolled in the spring 2025 term and working at RecSports to receive an award.
6. Previous recipients of any RecSports student employee scholarships are not eligible.

• You are classified as an international undergraduate student currently enrolled at UT Austin. Preference will be given to incoming first-year students. 
• You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
• You must be able to demonstrate financial need.
• You have received all or part of your preparatory education on the African continent.

• Must be enrolled full time (at least 12, preferably 15 hours) in both the fall and spring semesters of the following academic year (during the tenure of the award)
• Strong preference in selection criteria (though not required): Commitment to about South Asian histories languages, and cultures either through current coursework, or future plans.
• Must be a student majoring in the College of Liberal Arts, specifically relating to Indian Studies.

• Academic Summary (from Registrar’s Office) or informal UT Transcript.
• One letter of recommendation from a faculty member.
• One-page personal statement (350 words or less) that addresses one's interest in India and future plans for the study of South Asian languages, histories, and cultures at UT and beyond.

• a science GPA of 3.5 (science includes: biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics).

The Barbara Jordan Excellence Fund is available to full-time master's students in good academic standing at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. Awards from this endowment can be used to supplement any available Barbara Jordan Professional Development Funds to assist students in covering the costs associated with exceptional opportunities to develop policy and governing skills. For example, these funds may aid students who are selected to present research at a major conference, testify before a legislative body, or similar opportunities.

The Barbara Jordan Professional Development Fund is available to all full-time, attending, degree-seeking MPAff, MGPS, or DC Concentration students at the LBJ School in good academic standing. These fellowship awards can be used to offset costs associated with academic and professional experiences, such as traveling to a conference or an interview. Individual students can receive up to $250 annually until the funds are exhausted.

The Bill Frisbie Endowed Scholarship was established by Austin native William P. (Bill) Frisbie II whose strong ties to The University of Texas at Austin and Recreational Sports compelled him to reward student employees for outstanding service and dedication to RecSports.

Bill spent many formative years on the Forty Acres while his father served as a professor in the Department of Sociology in the College of Liberal Arts. Bill earned a bachelor of journalism degree from UT in 1984 and honed his writing and reporting skills as a senior sports writer for The Daily Texan, later serving as editor of The Longhorn Letter, a sports publication of the Texas Exes’ Student Association. He has been a writer for InsideTexas.comsince 2002 and is the co-author of “Game of My Life: Texas Longhorns.”

As a student, Bill was an officer in Delta Tau Delta, a fraternity whose intramural championships in the 1960s are legendary and honored on the Intramural Wall of Fame in Gregory Gym. He maintains his connection with RecSports as a member and regular visitor to the gym, as well as a supporter of Friends of RecSports. By establishing the endowment for students employed by RecSports, Bill follows the example of his late father, Dr. William Parker Frisbie, a former UT professor and chair of the Department of Sociology who, in 2008, inspired the establishment of an endowment to support outstanding faculty and graduate students within his department.

Bill Patman, a Texas state senator for 25 years and later a United States Congressman, came to UT in 1944. He left to serve in the Marine Corp. during World War II and returned to Texas in the Fall of 1946. Between 1946 and 1953 he was an intramural water polo champion, wrestling runner-up and three-time member of the All-Intramural water polo team while playing for his SAE fraternity. During this time at UT he was also in the Air Force ROTC, later serving in the Air Force Reserve. After UT, Mr. Patman became a member of the Early Birds, an exercise group of Austin businessmen, state legislators and UT faculty who met at 6:30am in Gregory Gym for a weekly exercise program. His family would like to honor both his memory and an outstanding RecSports student employee with this scholarship.

The Carlos and Clara Quintanilla Scholarship is a $5,000 spring tuition award that recognizes an undergraduate international student enrolled in the Cockrell School of Engineering who will return to Mexico and positively impact the Mexican economy. Applicants must have been a resident of Mexico for at least 10 years prior to attending UT and demonstrate financial need.

Application Details

In addition to the online application, the following criteria must be met:

1. You must be a student currently enrolled in the Cockrell School of Engineering.

2. You resided in Mexico 10 years immediately prior to enrolling in the Cockrell School of Engineering.

3. You must be on a non-immigrant visa (F-1, J-1, etc.) and be classified as an international student at UT Austin.

4. You must be enrolled full-time at UT Austin during the award semester. 

5. You must be in good academic standing with UT Austin.

6. You can demonstrate financial aid.

International students are eligible to apply to a variety of scholarships across the University. Charles & Carolyn Spence, James & Kathryn (Spence) Nance, and William (Spence) & Edith Nance Endowed Scholarship comes from a family whose wish it is to recognize an outstanding RecSports student employee in honor of the late United States Navy Seal Michael Monsoor. William Nance was an integral part of the successful Phi Gamma Delta intramural flag football teams in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He and his family are proud to be able to give back to students involved with the UT RecSports program with this award. All candidates for this award must satisfy at least one of the following requirements:

• A veteran of the United States military, with preference to anyone who was honorably discharged from service.
• Enrolled in any ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) program
• Committed to post graduate military training and/or service
• A child of a veteran satisfying the first criteria above

The Churchill Scholarship offers U.S. citizens of exceptional academic talent and outstanding achievement the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in engineering, mathematics, or sciences at the University of Cambridge, Churchill College. The scholarship covers all tuition and fees, and offers generous travel and living allowances. A campus committee selects UT Austin’s nominees before applications are forwarded to the Churchill Foundation. COLA: Pope Francis's Catholic Church: The Making of the Modern Papacy Scholarship (Education Abroad)

Funds distributed from the endowment shall be used to provide fellowships to graduate students in Social Work. Students shall be selected on the basis of interest in the field of substance use and recovery with a preference for students in the master's degree program.

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) award is for outstanding juniors and seniors in the fields of engineering, mathematics and natural or applied sciences who have shown initiative, creativity and excellence.  Scholarships are awarded to students who have the intention of pursuing research or advance their field upon completion of their final degree.  Those intending to pursue a practice in professional medicine are not eligible for the Astronaut Scholarship.  Special consideration is not given to students majoring in aeronautical/astronautical engineering or those intending to pursue careers as astronauts.

The DeDe and Joe Bill Watkins Endowed Scholarship honors the spirit, passion, and success of one of the Department's supporters. Joe Bill Watkins can be found on the Intramural Wall of Fame 13 times for a variety of different sports. When he wasn’t playing with his teams, he stayed busy studying law and stayed active with the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and Texas Cowboys organization. His love of intramurals and the experiences he had participating in them have led him back to the 40 Acres, where he now spends countless hours helping RecSports with fundraising efforts and chairing the RecSports Leadership Team. It is because of Joe Bill that many of today’s scholarships exist.

The Delts were a dominant intramural force in the 1960s, winning numerous championships and appearing nearly 140 times on the Intramural Wall of Fame in both team and individual sports. This award honors the fraternity’s accomplishments by establishing a permanent endowment to honor the great Delts of that era.

There are many opportunities for students to apply for scholarships, both within and outside the department/college. Listed below are scholarships available throughout the school year: students should start their planning well in advance so as not to miss any deadlines. Many of these scholarships are for study abroad, but several can be used for general expenses. Since many scholarships are need-based, you will want to ensure your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is on file at UT. The FAFSA is available after January 1; students should submit their application as early as possible.

Several of these scholarships are accessed through the GLOBAL A$$IST website. Please apply only to the scholarship that corresponds to the semester in which you will begin your study or research program.

Must be a current full-time CS student. 

If you are awarded a scholarship, you must enroll full-time (minimum of 12 hours) in the subsequent fall and spring semesters.
